FADO

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN FADO

There are certainly more doubts than confirmed facts related to the true origin of Fado. However, being recognized and elevated to Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, confirms and testifies the great value of the only musical language that may be immediately identified as authentically portuguese.

It is important to know and understand the few theses that use the fado’s origin as the main point. But equally important should be the understanding of its musical, poetical and performing characters, concerning specially the traditional fado.

Names like Ercília Costa, Berta Cardoso, Madalena de Melo, Júlio Proença ou Joaquim Campos featured a more popular diffusion of this music in the beginning of the XXth century, side by side whith renowned players, such as Armando Augusto Freire or Martinho d’Assunção. Back then, they used to sing through popular poems, that only survived due to oral transmission, but, from the beginning of the second XXth century half on, some poets (even the popular ones) like Gabriel de Oliveira, Frederico de Brito, João Linhares Barbosa or Henrique Rego started to sign their creation, being responsible for the increase of attention that fado started to get.

Amália Rodrigues took this musical style to whole new level and its ultimate internationalization. The extraordinary melodist Frederico Valério dedicated her a huge repertoire, extended even more by the french-portuguese Alain Oulman. Through its melodies, she started to sing creations from the most respected names of the portuguese literature, such as Luís de Camões, José Régio or Alexandre O’Neil.

It is the main point of this postgraduate studies course to embrace and study these subjects, both in a theoretical and performing way related to this music’s instrumental part (Portuguese guitar, Classical guitar and bass/double bass), but also focused in a soloist function/perspective. This last one includes the singing, with the poetry, but also the chance be transposed to melodical instruments like wind and bowed, helping to search, understand and reach all the musical expression that fado claims.
